How to make a small-business website easier for AI search to understand

There is no magic “AI SEO” switch. The strongest foundation is still crawlable, specific, well-structured content with clear business identity and evidence.

Start with normal search fundamentals

AI search systems still need reliable web content to retrieve, understand and cite. Important service information should be present in crawlable HTML rather than hidden entirely inside images or client-side interactions. Clear titles, headings, internal links and useful page copy remain important.

Make the entity obvious

Use one consistent business name, clear service descriptions, a real contact route, geographic relevance where appropriate and structured data that accurately describes the organisation and pages. Case studies and author information help connect claims to real experience.

Write answers worth extracting

Useful articles should answer a specific question near the top, then provide context, caveats and practical detail. This helps human readers scan and also gives retrieval systems cleaner passages to work with.

Allow the crawlers you want

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used for ChatGPT search. If appearing there matters to you, do not block it in robots.txt or at the firewall/CDN layer. Google similarly needs normal crawl access to understand and index public pages.

What about llms.txt?

It can be useful as a concise machine-readable site guide for systems that choose to consume it, so FifteenFold provides one. Google has clarified that llms.txt is not needed for Google Search and does not improve or harm Google visibility by itself. Treat it as supplementary documentation, not a ranking tactic.

Measure AI visibility separately

Track referral traffic from AI tools where available and use webmaster platforms that expose citation or AI-performance reporting. The goal is to learn which topics and pages are actually being surfaced, then improve the underlying content rather than chasing a new acronym.
